Technical Project Oversight

When a project is too big for a freelancer but too important to hand over blindly, you need someone technical on your side. I review the work, ask the right questions and make sure what gets delivered is actually what you're paying for.

An experienced developer on your side of the table

Working with a digital agency can be brilliant. But if you don't have the technical knowledge to evaluate what's being proposed, challenge what's being built or even know what questions to ask, it's easy to end up paying for something that doesn't quite do what it should.

I've spent over 15 years working with agencies, working inside agencies and delivering projects independently. I know how projects go sideways: scope creep, vague specs, corners cut under deadline pressure, things getting lost in translation between multiple teams and handoffs, deliverables that look finished on the surface but aren't quite right underneath. My job is to make sure none of that happens to you.

This isn't about being adversarial with your agency or their development teams. The best outcomes happen when expectations are clear, specs are tight and everyone involved knows what "done" actually looks like. I can help make that happen.

Independent and impartial

I don't work for your agency. I work for you. My only interest is making sure you get what you're paying for.

Been on both sides

I've delivered agency projects and I've overseen them. I know where problems hide and what good work actually looks like.

Plain English, no jargon

I translate the technical stuff into clear language so you can make informed decisions without needing a CS degree.

Flexible involvement

Full project oversight, a one-off proposal review, or anything in between. You decide how much involvement makes sense.

What I can help with 🔍

Whether you're about to kick off a new project or you're midway through one that doesn't feel right, here's where I add value.

Technical Briefing

I turn your business goals into clear, specific technical requirements that agencies can quote against accurately. No ambiguity, no room for "that wasn't in the brief."

Proposal Review

An honest assessment of agency proposals, quotes and timelines. I'll tell you if you're getting good value, if something's been overscoped, or if important things have been quietly left out.

Progress Monitoring

Regular check-ins against milestones, holding agencies accountable to what was agreed and stepping in early when things start to drift off track.

Code & Quality Review

Independent review of what's actually being delivered. I check that the code, performance, accessibility and security meet the agreed standards, not just that it looks right on the surface.

Stakeholder Communication

I join agency meetings as your technical voice: interpreting jargon, asking the questions that matter and flagging risks before they snowball into problems.

Handover & Documentation

I make sure you get full access, proper documentation and a genuine knowledge transfer at the end. No vendor lock-in, no missing passwords, no nasty surprises down the line.

Freelance Web Developer

15+ years building websites and managing digital projects

I'm Adam, a freelance web developer based in the UK. I've spent years on both sides: delivering projects inside agencies and helping clients make sense of what their agencies are doing. I know how these projects work, where they go wrong and what to look for.

I'm not here to cause friction between you and your agency. Good agencies actually welcome independent oversight because it keeps everyone aligned and avoids expensive misunderstandings later. I'm just here to make sure you can make informed decisions with confidence. I also offer digital consulting for broader strategic guidance and WordPress development if you need hands-on delivery.

How it works

Whether you need full project oversight or just a second opinion on a proposal, the process is straightforward.

Brief

We start with your project goals, your current agency relationship and where you feel oversight would be most valuable. Sometimes that's the whole project, sometimes it's just a specific concern.

Review

I assess what's on the table: proposals, contracts, in-progress work or deliverables. I'll flag anything that doesn't add up, anything that's missing and anything that could cause problems later.

Engage

For ongoing projects, I join key meetings, review deliverables at each milestone and give clear, practical feedback that keeps things moving in the right direction.

Complete

At the end, I confirm the final delivery meets the agreed spec and that all access, assets and documentation have been properly handed over to you. No loose ends.

Frequently asked questions

Won't my agency find this adversarial?

Good agencies actually welcome it. Clear expectations and independent review reduce miscommunication, catch problems early and make the whole project run more smoothly. If an agency is uncomfortable with oversight, that in itself tells you something.

How much does agency oversight cost?

It depends on the scope. A one-off proposal review is a few hours' work. Full project oversight is an ongoing commitment. I'll give you a clear quote based on what's involved, and for most projects the cost of oversight pays for itself by catching problems that would be much more expensive to fix later.

Can you help if a project has already started and isn't going well?

Yes, and that's actually one of the most common reasons people get in touch. I can review what's been delivered so far, assess where things stand and help you get the project back on track, whether that means working with the current agency or finding a different path forward.

Do I need to be technical to work with you?

Not at all. That's the whole point. I handle the technical evaluation and translate everything into plain English so you can make confident decisions without needing to understand the code yourself.

What kinds of projects do you oversee?

Mostly website builds, redesigns, platform migrations and e-commerce projects, but the same principles apply to any digital project. If an agency is building something for you and you want an independent pair of eyes on it, I can probably help.

Can I just get a one-off review rather than ongoing oversight?

Absolutely. If you just want a second opinion on a proposal, a code review of what's been delivered, or a sanity check before signing something off, that works too. You don't need to commit to the full process.

Got an agency project that needs a second pair of eyes?

Tell me what's going on and I'll let you know how I can help. No pressure, no commitment until you're ready.
